hold me closer tiny dancer

And I'm back.
For the last two thousand and twelve weeks I'm been scampering between home and school with a constant look of torment and anxiety on my face. My brain has been submerged by the definitions of mens rea and actus reus, historiography and film noir and legions of other facts that, as of yesterday, I will never need to know again! Yes, I had EXAMS! And they're over! .. Until November ...

Exam time has got to be one of the most unfashionable times of the year. I spent my time in black leggings, jumpers and maybe the occasional pair of blue jeans.

Now that they are over I can finally do the things I just didn't whilst in my state of living-deadosity. I plan on painting my nails dark red and staying up until the wee hours watching the box sets (How I Met Your Mother & The Office FTW) and movies my sister hopefully brings home from overseas today!
Anyhoo, here's a picture of Anna Brewster who appears to have acquired blue hair.
love the chain gang & funkay grandma hair
Anna is from the sensational but short lived British TV show Nearly Famous, (no relation to the brilliance that is Almost Famous)
She starred opposite Aaron Johnson,(the 'sex god' from Angus,Thongs) and Talulah Riley (St Trinians and The Boat that Rocked)
All of which are movies and TV shows I adore..

Hey look, it's Alexa Chung. Why are most of the things I ever talk about British?
I love these Jeffrey Campbell sandals Alexa is wearing and theBarbara Hulanicki for Topshop dress is brilliant!

Maybe Maddy Won't?

So I seem to have been tagged by Louise of becausewearingblacklooksmysterious lets do this thing. Then I can continue watching Australia's Next Top Model, (Go Madison!)
[1] What are your current obsessions?
Where do I start!
The Mighty Boosh has been one for a while!
Surfy hair / BIG amazing hair
Tristan Blair's beautiful booties!
Black ankle boots with the elastic in the sides.. What are they called? Look like workers boots but prettier?
Oversized (red) blazers
Let's wrap this up: Studs, lace, leather, Edie S, big tees, big eyes, excessive eye makeup and Zeke.
[2] What is your weirdest obsession?
Hmm.. everything I obsess over is probably seen as weird by others.. I am smitten by Russell Brand at the moment. But fashion-wise I'd say,
Hair horns!
[3] What are you wearing today?
The most fashionable of all ensembles, my school uniform. And to make it even better, it is my winter uniform complete with yellow shirt, tie and blue tights. Mmm, sex on a stick.
[4] What’s for dinner today?
I had pumpkin soup and a roast. Potatees, pees, gravy, beef, etc. It's my one good meal of the week.
[5] Why is today special?
Because I went to my Granny's for dinner! Also, I had a triple spare in school-always a bonus!
[6] What would you like to learn to do?
Anything and everything. Anything I can't do I'd like to know how, and I can't do a lot of things! Maybe first I'd like to learn to sew or something..
[7] What’s the last thing you bought?
A black lace dress from Dangerfield in Melbourne Central. The girl that served me was pretty funky. She had a British accent, under-cuts and (my favourite) grey nailpolish!
[9] What is your most challenging goal right now?
PASSING VCE! Argh! It doesn't even matter that much but they make it sound as though you're destined to become a rubbish collector if you get anything below a 90.
[10] What do you think about the person who tagged you?
Louise is super cool. She has a fantastic blog! And most likely an English accent. swoon.
[11] If you could have a house totally paid for, fully furnished anywhere in the world, where would you like it to be?
Melbourne CBD, or Sydney (just because they have all the mags there) or London(the part where Vivian Westwood's 'SEX' shop used to be) because it's .. London!
[12] What would you like to have in your hands right now?
The 'rare' GHD or Jeffrey Campbell attic cutouts or any of Tristan Blair's new range or Noel Fielding or...
[13] What would you like to get rid of?
My school work and the drained feeling I get the moment I walk through those school gates.
[14] If you could go anywhere in the world for the next hour, where would you go?
I'm dead tired. I guess the land of nod.. seriously, Paris can wait. I have school tomorrow ;P
[15] Which language do you want to learn?
I've been learning Japanese for the last 10 years. And I'm still not fluent! Oh and Spanish! te quiero
[16] What do you look for in a friend?
Funny and entertaining, genuine, kind, and bonus points for good dress sense but that doesn't really matter.
[17] Who do you want to meet in person?
Russell Brand because he's funny as, Noel Fielding, James Dean and James Franco, Jimi Hendrix on the 17th of August (coincidentally my birthday) 1969. All those fantastic fashion bloggers. All of them are so inspirational.
[18] What’s your favorite type of music?
Rock.. alternative.. my favourite song is Unchained Melody and I often listen to If you want to sing out, sing out and Wild World but I love ACDC, Kings of Leon (duh), The Killers, SHORTSTACK, Birds of Tokyo, The Getaway Plan, a little band known as The Beatles, etc.
[19] What’s the favorite piece of clothing in your own closet?
Oversized blue 'totem' tee from Topshop, dark grey skinny Levi Jeans and light grey Sass & Bide ones, H&M leather jacket and Tony Bianco black platform ankle boots.
[20] What is your dream job?
Journalist baby
[21] Any favorite models?
Miranda Kerr, C
armen Solomons, Alice Dellal, Zippora Seven (best. name. ever), Megan Gale..
[22] What would you mostly likely spend $100 on?
My school formal.. It's coming up soon but I can't be bothered planning anything. Expect a call for help in a few weeks.
[23] What would you like an endless supply of?
V8 juice., It's a boring answer but for some reason I go though like a litre of it a day... Also bangles, bracelets, rings and necklaces of all variations!  I would die to have arms like these..
[24] Girl crush?
It has to be Kat Dennings... why. I think she is just really genuine and Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlidt was a kickass film!
[25] Do you admire anyone’s style?
Yours! Seriously. I love anybody who is doing their own thing. I like the styles of MK&A,
Rumi, Hande, Agyness, Noel Fielding & Vince Noir, the girls from Skins especially Effy and Cassie (remember those shoes!)
[26] Describe your personal style.
Hmm. In the colder months, the classic Melbourne look, dark clothing (mostly black), leather, lace, lots of accessories and a touch of sparkle. In summer it's more surfy, lots of denim shorts and dresses but just as many accessories..

And now it's time for me to tag someone..
and
Tag! You're it!

Cindafuckin'rella

Over the past week I have watched Pretty Woman exactly three times. I love all the fantastic 90s outfits especially Viv's 'hooker' ensemble from the start. The whole concept of the story is the perfect fairy tale but the eye candy is to die for. Look out for those awesome bags hanging on the mannequin in the scene where the shop assistants wont serve her!

I am craving this oversized red and black tux jacket! It is the perfect length, colour and style to chuck on over the top of anything and make it that little more.. rock. Since watching the movie for the first time I've been imagining how Viv came upon this wonderful piece and have come to believe that it was her high school boyfriend's favourite jacket- he gave it to her to keep her warm after a date one night and the next day she fled to LA still clutching it.. maybe.. probably not.

These outfits are fantastic, I especially love Viv's jewelery. I want to collect a large array of bracelets and bangles that I can layer like this. I like the idea of them all having significant meaning to you. I have a leather bracelet with a gold 'M' on it which I love because I have never seen anything like it and it used to be my Mum's, although she wore it as a 'W'.
I love the dress with cut-outs and have been looking for something similar although not so extreme. Supre has a black cut-out dress at the moment that would look great with a lace leotard underneath.
I think I'm going to have to invest in a lovely oversized tux jacket.. Does anyone know where I can get one similar to Viv's, coloured or all black?
Ripped pantyhose & knee high boots,

'Tis but the truth in a masquerade

We all know parties are fun.. right. They are. (Unless they are the type of party where people arrive drunk and half dressed, you get knocked over by a boy in a Heidi wig and green face paint and someone calls you Hilda.) But what would make them more fun. No, not water bombs although they are quite amusing. I'm talking masks!

So what am I getting at with my 2am ramblings? In short. I'm invited to a masquerade party! The holy grail of parties for the fashion-obsessed. The party is in a couple of weeks and I need help planning my outfit. My inspiration so far is THAT episode of Gossip Girl and Marie Antoinette.. I want to do something a little more edgy and of coarse incorporate my lace gloves, tights and a pair of black platform booties.. just to mix it up. If anyone knows any places in Melb that sell masks or if you have any pics, how-tos etc. Please. I'm gonna need all the help I can get. :p
I'd like to do something like this with a black piece of plain lace.. What do you think?
Gooey eggs & tin foil,

My name is Maddy and I am a flapper

So it all began last night, I was having our family dinner at my Grandparent's like we do every Tuesday,(very Gilmore Girls) and I don't remember how exactly the conversation turned to this but, by the time we'd finished our soup, I'd been declared a flapper!
Yes, according to my Gran I dress like a jazz loving, bob-haired, cigarette smoking, 1920s flapper.
Wikipedia describes a flapper as "a"new breed" of young women who wore short skirts, bobbed their hair, listened to the new jazz music, and flaunted their distain for what was then considered acceptable behavior. The flappers were seen a brash for wearing excessive makeup, drinking, treating sex in a casual manner, smoking, driving automobiles, and otherwise flouting conventional and sexual norms."

And although you have never seen me (yet) I can assure you that I barely tick two of these requirements, short skirts and makeup. It's not as if I walk around dressed as Catherine Zeta-Jones in Chicago, I usually just wear scuffed Chucks and odd socks..

Although I'm still a little confused by my new label it did get me thinking. I could do with a bit more 'flapper' in my wardrobe. Here are some of my favourite flapperish fandangles.

Who's a flapper?
Sportsgirl headband, pearl and art deco bracelets
jeweled headbands & silk stockings

ob.ses.sion (noun) the state of being obsessed with something

I'm verging on becoming unhealthily obsessed with lace.
I see it and melt into a world of pre-war cabaret and
Diablo Cody-style exploits. It's just that lace is so brazen and tempting, not to mention easy to wear and looks fantastically quirky strutting down the city streets with a pair of beat up Docs. And I admit. I have come to possess a whopping collection of lace tights, leggings and undergarments.
But there is still more lace out there waiting to be added to my infantile collection.
I wish I could wear lace like these lovelies.

I cannot remember where the first pic is from at all- please comment if you do.
The last two are from the always inspiring
